CHICAGO — While pink hearts and cute lovey-dovey decor may not be the typical imagery associated with the Halloween community, many in the spooky fandom are embracing a holiday that’s all that and more — Valloween.

What is Valloween?
Valloween, which is sometimes called Ghoulentine’s Day, Spooky Valentine’s Day or Valentine-o-Ween, is a celebration of Valentine’s Day with a Halloween twist. People in the spooky community love to put a spin on traditional holidays and Valloween (sometimes spelled Valoween) is no different.
Valloween falls on Feb. 14, but most spooky enthusiasts start celebrating as soon as Creepmas ends and the new year begins.
Valloween often invokes imagery of the classic red and pink hearts with ghosts or bats as accent pieces. Some take a darker approach and go with the “bloody valentine” or “bleeding heart” theme by incorporating more black and harsher splashes of red.
How do you celebrate Valloween?
There are no wrong ways to celebrate Valloween, but many people simply do traditional Valentine’s Day activities — such as card and gift exchanges — and just add some spooky fun. For example, some friends and I are throwing a Valloween party. We’re decorating with classic pink and red hearts but also tossing in a ton of bats and black Halloween decor. The holiday is all about mashing together the two aesthetics.
If you want to celebrate Valloween with me and my spooky pals, visit Patreon and sign up for the $5/month Pumpkin Spice Pals tier. This month, members are getting Valloween cards sent to their mailboxes. Each card is designed by a spooky small business owner, handwritten by me and I always include some fun stickers. Join in on the fun!
