CHICAGO — I’m already thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. There. I said it. Christmas isn’t here, I haven’t finished my shopping and I’m already jotting down goals and plans for 2023. I can’t help myself.
But this isn’t your generic list of “get in shape” and “stop spending so much money” resolutions. This is a Halloween blog so this list is a roundup of resolutions that will help you create a spooky season that is sure to be one of the best.
So while the rest of the world is still wrapping up gifts, here are some ideas for Halloween-themed New Year’s Resolutions you need to make this year.
Make a bucket list and stick to it
You know I’m a fan of lists, and if you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I always make a fall bucket list and try my hardest to stick to it. I schedule friend hangouts around it and family outings. A fall bucket list really helps you keep your fall schedule together. So this year, set aside an hour to research all the cool things you want to do from September through October and STICK TO THE LIST. The laundry will be there when you get home. Cross something off the list.

Vow to work on your costume ahead of time
The Halloween costume scramble is something that happens to the best of us. This year, promise yourself that you won’t wait until October 15 to start costume shopping. The best time to start searching is July or August. It’s such a good feeling when October rolls around and you’re already set for the big day.
Plan an epic Friendsgiving NOW
If you’ve never hosted a Friendsgiving, then I’ll tell you this: If you do it right, it’s a ton of work! The first year I hosted it, I made a Pinterest board with all the goodies I was going to have. So make a board, write down ideas and plan who you’re going to invite. Make 2023 the year you finally get your group of ghouls together for a night of feasting.

Promise yourself you’ll Halloweenify at least one holiday
One of the coolest things about the spooky community is seeing how everyone Halloweenifys every other holiday. And I’ll admit that the first year I joined the spooky community and I wasn’t a part of this big thing, I felt a little left out. So make it a goal to spookify one other holiday. Which is going to be? Are you going to celebrate Valoween? Easterween? Creepmas? Your choice.
Do something outside of your comfort zone
Ah yes. A generic resolution. But honestly, this is always a good one. This year, I went to London and Edinburgh with a group of people I didn’t know very well for a two week study abroad. ME! Someone who hates travel and is scared of trying new things. So even if that new thing you do isn’t spooky related, make 2023 the year you try something different, something fun, something you wouldn’t normally do.
